 Who Is My Tech Coach?

My name is Shannon Youngman.  I have five years of experience as a middle and high school science teacher, as well as four years as an instructional technology coach.  My educational background includes a BS in secondary science education, MA in educational technology, and an EdS in administration and supervision.

 What Is Your Tech Coach?

Have you ever thought about how to approach Schelty's design qualities in your classroom?  Effective use of technology in your lessons is a great way to "work on the work."

Marc Prensky, a leader of technology use in schools, states that "Our students have changed radically" and that in order for teachers to reach their students they must also change (2001).   A technology coach is there to guide you in your endeavor to transform student learning by providing teachers and schools with customized instructional support and best practices technology instructional practices.

The technology coach is an effective strategy for focusing on technology integration as a way of meeting the No Child Left Behind goal to "improve student academic achievement through the use of technology in elementary and secondary schools" (United States Department of Education, 2001).

How Can A Tech Coach Help Me?

The purpose of a technology coach is to assist teachers with effective use of technology in their classroom in order to improve student learning.  In order to accomplish this, a technology coach is responsible for the following:
  • Conducting individual or small group teacher conferences on appropriate use of instructional technology in all content areas.
  • Modeling appropriate teaching strategies infusing technology in classrooms.
  • Demonstrating and promoting appropriate and ethical use of technology with regard to privacy and copyright issues.
  • Providing up-to-date training on the technology tools in your school and their most effective use in the curriculum in order to meet district initiatives.
